I had a 12 hour layover in Frankfurt on the way to Bangkok. And needless to say I was not looking forward to it. Until, that is, I checked tripadvisor before arriving and found out that in December Frankfurt holds a huge outdoor Christmas Market. It’s pretty well known, apparently; I met a couple from Australia who live in the Middle East who flew up for a few days just to see the market!

Anyway, took the train into the old part of the city, went to the #1 rated art museum on tripadvisor (Stradel) and then wandered around the huge outdoor market. Along the way I crossed the pedestrian bridge which is beautiful in its own right, then when you get closer you see the thousands of locks which have been attached to the bridge in honour of loved ones, with their keys presumably thrown in the river.

It turned out to be an unexpectedly wonderful day, full of art, a ‘lovers’ bridge’ followed by German sausage, mulled wine and pastries at the outdoor market to keep me entertained.

On the way back from the museum I passed a couple tying heart shaped balloons to the lovers’ bridge.

My mug for the mulled wine, or gluhwein. It’s 2.50 Euros for the wine, and a 2.50 Euro deposit to use the mug. How lovely and environmentally friendly:)

Just a regular hot dog in these parts:)
